Statesmen shine under the Lights

Once a year the Nike invitational goes under the light and for many on the team it a chance to shine and take the spotlight. For the distance runners it is a special treat because it is well known that they run better in cool weather. The only time the distance group gets that opportunities are either at Districts, regional or of course Nike invitational under the lights.

Junior Joe Gerner unfortunately will be missing the District and more than likely the regional championships, so had to take advance of the perfect weather. From the start of the 3200m race, Gerner settle into his traditional running from the front style and came though the first mile in 5:14. Joe would keep pushing the pace, running smoothly and confidentially. He was joined by a runner from Westfield who pushed him the last 200m to super race and personal best by nearly 20 seconds. Freshman Logan Hirka following the great pace set by Gerner dropped nearly 12 seconds from his personal best to dip below the 11 minute mark for the 3200m.

Earlier in the day it was sophomore Alexander “AJ” Norton who pulling out a bag of surprise when he busted out in the heats of the 1600m run. Norton was not slated to run the race but got his chance when the three seniors schedule to compete was a no show. AJ took advantage of the perfect weather under the lights to lead most of the race and dropped nearly 30 seconds off his personal best and dip under the 5 minute mark for the event.

Junior Courtney Herbolsheimer consistence, competitiveness and leadership sometime get over looked because she always perform to the best of her ability each meet, every time she stepped on the track. Herbolsheimer running against some of the best runners in the state of Virginia recorded a personal best winning her heat of the 800m run and came within 0.42 of her personal best in the 1600m run. The 1600m race produced three automatic state qualifiers and the best time in the state this year. Senior Nicole Merriless record a seasonal best in the 800m by nearly 15 seconds.

Junior Brittany Johnson’s competitor in the regional got to be hating on her. In her two final events of the day, she let her competitors think they had a won only to snatch the gold medal at the end. In the 200m dash, a Washington and Lee runner flew by Johnson out the blocks but she forgot it the race was 200m meets not 20 meters. So with 100m meters to go – Johnson turned on the after burns to win her second straight invitational 200m dash. The long jump final was right after the 200m dash, so Johnson was spent but she was sitting in third place and need to pull it out the bag again. Her first two jumps did nothing to improve her standing, so after gathering herself, taking her time, Johnson run down the runway on her final jump and left the tape do it thing and record her fourth long jump win in as many invitational this season.

Junior Meara Goss has been struggle to find the form she expected this season but the results still showed that she is one of the best in the regional. Event though her mark is not where she wants it, Goss has medaled in each invitational this season – tonight under the lights she won two more – taking 4^th in the shot put and discus.

The Statesmen has two meets before the district championship and this will be considered battle week – get to the top three in your event or hit the Lettering, District, regional or state standard or your season is over.

Brittany Johnson wins four events set three meet records.

The Statesmen 2009 spring track and field season has been a series of crazy happenings and unpredictability’s much like the weather. So finally the weather cooperated and so did the Statesmen. The sun came out and the stars of the team came out led by three established leaders’ juniors Brittany Johnson and Meara Goss and sophomore Courtney Herbolsheimer.

Junior Brittany Johnson sweep the all the jumping events at the Liberty District championship during the indoor season and based on her dominating performance at the 4^th Heritage High School/LoudounPrepSports.com Invitational. Johnson won the triple jump, the 100m and 200m dash – all in new meet records and for good measures she won the long jump and finished 3^rd in the high jump. Her victory in the 100m dash automatically qualified her for the Virginia AAA State championship, qualified for the Northern regional championship with her 200m victory and the Liberty District championship in the triple jump, long jump and high jump.

Sophomore Courtney Herbolsheimer had a challenge day starting with an early morning soccer match and then rushing down to Heritage to compete. She paid the price in the 1600m run but rebounded nicely to secure a medal in the 800m run.

Junior Meara Goss has been having an up and down season but with the warm weather comes higher expectations and better performance. Goss seem to be on the road to another successful season – grabbing a medal in the shot put competition.

Senior Geoff Barnes has shown flashes of brilliance and once again there were flashes at the LoudounPrepSports.com Invitational. Barnes achieved two big personal best in the 100m and 200m including an automatic Liberty District championship qualifier.

Youth also served notice with freshman Logan Hirka and Abigail Hodges stepped up and improve their standing on the team. Hirka took over 2^nd place on the team in the 3200m, dipping under the 11 minute mark; he is also ranked #2 in the 1600m. Hodges dropped into the faster section of the 100m and 200m as a late replacement, took the opportunity to grab the #2 ranking in the 100m dash.

Statesmen Concluded Winter Season at State Championship

If, Fairfax County budget cuts has it way it could be the last season for indoor track and field for a while. The Statesmen team made sure it was one of their most successful seasons in nine (9) seasons. The final four members of the team completed the season at the VA AAA state meet in Hampton, VA – Boo Williams Sports Complex.

Junior Brittany Johnson finished an impressive season finishing top 15 in all three of the jumping events that she qualified for the State meet. Johnson’s season included three District titles, two District silver medals, one regional silver medal and one regional bronze medal.

Junior Meara Goss has the highest finish for the Statesmen improving her 13^th place finish last year to make the finals in the women’s shot put. Goss placed 9^th in the finals just missing out a State medal by one place. Goss’s wonderful season include her second straight indoor shot put title, a silver medal regional medal and the Statesmen’s #2 ranking.

Every season you get someone who comes out of left field make you go wow!!! This season it senior Nicole Brown and man was she impressive. When the season started we thought was going to be a very good high jumper after clearing 4ft 8in at the first meet. Brown was not even an average hurdler and shot putting was not even in her future. The hurdling was changed on one impressive showing at the first invitation when she dropped over a second from her personal best and the performances as gotten better and better. Throughout this successful season Brown would collect a District runner up, regional bronze medal and her final race would be personal best to close the season. Nicole’s shot putting started when she was asked to try and get a mark for the District championship and it would end up with her in the state meet. First she collected an impressive bronze medal at the District title and two weeks later blow the competition out the circle by taking a surprising bronze at the regional championship, qualifying for the State meet. For the season Brown competed in 43 events, quite impressive because most people would compete on the team for four season and times would not get to compete in that many events.

Senior Aaron Anderson could not have imagined at the beginning of the season that he would be in the State championship. But, it’s amazing what hard work, dedication and believing and betting on yourself can do for you. Unless it happens to you it hard to explain how just one thing can change your outlook on life and your future. After never running the 55m hurdle in his life and end the season with the school record. One season, three short months can make you believe all things are possible. Anderson concluded a season with a bronze medal at the District title, a fourth place at the regional championship and broke the school record three times.

The spring season is upon us and we expect more athletes continued on the journey to join these leaders at the outdoor state meet in Newport News. We will be looking for some surprises and leaders to lead us back. We want to thank the coaches, Darrell General, Mindy Harman, Jose Portillo and Theodore Robinson. Also, thanks to all the parents who have showed their support throughout the season.

Lady Statesmen finished 3^rd at District with only 4 scorers

After Day one of the Liberty District championship, the Lady Statesmen sat in first place by three points. It was a big surprised but it was definitely on the radar because this season was theme, Return to Glory. A week before the championship, the wild card athlete had to drop off the team to work on her grades – so the goals of winning the title when from possible slim to none. But, we had a nothing theme, “Small School, Big Heart” and during the Day one – the heart of the champion would not stop beating as the team grab three (3) individual titles and first place. On day two, the only way to win the title was by perfection – the numbers just not in our favor. However, heart only just was not enough on day two as the numbers was just too much, event one, two and three sealed our fate. As the big school ranked up 30 points before we were able to grab 3 points. Woodson was impressive in winning the 4x2, 1000m and 500m before we took 5^th and 6^th in the 1000m and 500m dash respectively. The Statesmen did mount a comeback when by winning an individual title and grabbing another runner up to collect 18 more points to finish an impressive 3^rd place in the team title with only four athletes scoring points.

Junior Brittany Johnson grab another District title by winning the triple jump title to make a clean sweep in the jumps. Johnson added to the high and long jump crown won on Day one. She also ran a surprising and unexpected 300m dash to winning the slow section and grab a silver medal in the event.

Senior Nicole Brown continued her impressive winter track experience by qualifying in her third event for the regional championship (500m dash) and was the last athlete to miss making the finals in the triple jump after improving her personal best by over two feet.

Sophomore Courtney Herbolsheimer booked her place in her second event for the 2^nd year in a row for the regional championship. Herbolsheimer improved her personal best by over four seconds to take 5^th in the 1000m.

Overall the girl’s team placed 3^rd with 74 points and the boy’s placed 7^th with 18 points (we beat Stone Bridge by 18 points).

Liberty District Day One - Four District Titles won; Lady Statesmen in first place

The season was theme “Return to Glory” and after the first day of the Liberty District championship at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning complex, the Marshall Statesmen track and field team sure looks like their pushing to accomplish that mission. Two years ago, it took the extra ordinary efforts by a same group of 11 girls to win the District title and this year, the numbers are less as it will take the efforts of mainly 6 girls to pull that feat off. After day one of the championship, we at least have hope as the Lady Statesmen holds a slim three (3) point lead over W.T. Woodson behind some impressive performances.

Junior Brittany Johnson accounted for 28 of the 53 team points by grabbing two Liberty District titles in the Long jump and the High Jump. Johnson studying under the quiet leadership of sometimes forgotten coach Theodore Robinson have continues to excel in the pits. Robinson recognized her talents long before she got to Marshall and because of his belief in her which has brought her to this place. Johnson tried to hide her emotion of finally winning a jumping title indoors after losing out last year on misses. She added the Long jump title win her first jump and personal best for good measures. However, Johnson could not repeat as 55m dash District champion but grab a silver medal and 8 points for her effort. Her lost ended an impressive streak of five (5) straight 55m titles by a Lady Statesmen (Jacqueline Hargrove (2004, 2005, 2006), Shannon McVey (2007) and Brittany Johnson (2008).

So many times, we’ve seen clear favorites come into a meet expecting to win and those dreams get dashed, junior Meara Goss will not fall into the category, as she collected another Liberty District title in an impressive domination of the completion. From the very first throw, the crown to hand to the defending champion as she put it out of reach with a personal best, 34ft throw. Meara would improve a final throw another foot and just missed getting the school record but it was walk in the park for the defending champion. Goss won the event by over three feet and look to be in position to make a return to the Virginia AAA State meet.

Senior Alexander “Lex” Suares had his share of missteps and misfortune this season and his career but he still knows when it comes to the Liberty District and Statesmen throwing, we owned the circle. Saures knowledge of the Statesmen tradition enforced by the meet record holder his coach Jose Portillo got him ready for the District champs. This year like so many season, a Statesmen dominated the field to win another District title for Marshall Throwing.

To say Senior Nicole Brown is naturally gifted athlete is an understatement. There isn’t one sport which Brown has tired where she did not excelled, track and field was no different. Nicole came into the 55m hurdle competition ranked #1 and fully expected to qualify for the regional championship and hopefully taking home a title in her first and final championship. However, this is District championship and everyone was hungry, so despite an automatic regional qualified, a huge personal best – Brown, picked up an impressive silver medal in her first and only Liberty District track and field meet. What was not expected was for Brown to do anything in the Shot put competition however like we said – this is District competition and with her first throw, we knew it was going to be a special meet. Nicole would improve her mark by over seven (7) feet to surprise the competition and take an impressive bronze medal in the shot put.

Sophomore Courtney Herbolsheimer hard work started long time ago in the summer, throughout an impressive cross-country season and so far a wonderful indoor season. District champs was expected to be quite a telling definition of the season, Herbolsheimer knew it was going to be tough because the Liberty District over the last few years has produced some wonderful distance runners. However, when you study under a great General (Maine Corp, Hall of Famer, Darrell General), you can expect to be prepared for war. Thus, Courtney was ready for the battle as the race started and everyone was pushing the pace. Everyone stayed even for five laps and then the race got hotter and Herbolsheimer kept jockeying for position and did not realize how fast she was going. When she crossed the line and looked up at the clock the moment was realized, not only had she qualified for regional two years in a row, but she had significantly lower her personal best by over six seconds.

In athletics and in life some people are blessed with talent and things are giving to them. For others, that have talent they have to work for it and earn whatever is given to them. Senior Aaron Anderson has come a long way from four year ago and he has come a long way from a year ago. This year, Anderson was given a mission by his new hurdle Coach Mindy Harman, he was asked to do some things and he responded like true champions always do. He was asked to give himself a chance to be successful and accept the gifts and responsibilities of his talent. Most on the team has one maybe two coaches on coat tail riding, he had four but his true character and ability to accept the challenge did withered under the pressure. The turning point of the season had to be when he took his leadership role too far by switching the order of the relays but his response when Coach General brought down the hammer of disciple (that mean 250 push ups) was like a true leader, he did it without complaint or argument because he accepted the fact he and only he was responsible for his action.

So, it was understandable when Anderson got emotional when going up against national and state ranked hurdler Vince Brown and he did not win. While he accomplished the goal to reaching the regional championship (bronze medal and personal best), Aaron knew the hard work he put in the season and felt losing to anyone was not good enough. While the coaches and teammates felt he did wonderful, while everyone sees that he had come a long way from four year ago and one year ago, the heart of a champion is not satisfied until, he is champion. For good measures, Anderson jumped 19ft for the first time in his life to be the last to miss the finals. But, the hard work and journey continues with a new mission be champion and get to Hampton.

The championship concludes next Thursday, Feb. 5^th, 2009 in Landover, Maryland.

Liberty District - Day One

The South Lakes boys and Marshall girls squads hold a slight edge in the team scoring after the first day of the Liberty District championships held at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, MD on Thursday, January 29.

South Lakes has had the oustanding performer of the four districts within the Northern Region thus far in Vince Brown.
The Seahawks senior was a triple winner in the space of about an hour and a half as he posted personal bests and region leading marks with state meet qualifying victories in the long jump (22-1.5) the 55 meter hurdles (7.46) and the 55 dash (6.42); with the hurdle and dash performances also establishing new meet records.

Brown's exploits propelled South Lakes to the first day lead by the slimmest of margins as the Seahawks compiled 58 points.
Jefferson is right there with South Lakes at 57 points as they posted a field event win from senior Dan Markwalter in the pole vault (12-6) and received a 1-2 finish on the track from seniors Timmy Galvin (4:33.73) and Colin Maloney (4:35.72) in the 1,600 run.

The other wins on the boys side came from Marshall senior Lex Saures in the shot put (44-3.75) and McLean's 4x800 relay squad with their victory in 8:26.79.

The Marshall girls hold the lead at 53 points with more than half their points provided by senior Brittany Johnson as she won both the long jump (16-8.5) and high jump (5-2) as well as finishing second in the 55 dash at 7.65, with South Lakes senior Lachelle Wallace winning the event easily in a state auto qualifier of 7.39.

Woodson holds a firm second place spot with 50 points and had victories from sophomore Tiffany Reed in the 55 hurdles (9.24) and junior Erica Howes with a strong second half surge in the 1,600 run (5:13.14).

Marshall picked up another first place after junior Meara Goss claimed the shot put (35-4.5) and the same Langley quartet of Carolyn Shaw, Jill Canning, Amanda Steffy and Lauren Shaw won the 4x800 relay for the second year in a row; this time at 9:45.44.

The Liberty District Championship finishes up on Thursday February 5th at the P.G. Complex and will be held in conjunction with the final day of the Concorde District Championships with field events at 4:00 p.m. and running events starting at 5:00 p.m.

Statesmen excel during the winter break

Three weeks, three invitational track and field meets and three trips to the Liberty District championship site really allowed the Statesmen to shine. During the three week period, one state qualification was obtain by junior Brittany Johnson, seven (7) regional qualifiers where obtain, twenty-five (25) District marks were achieved and fifty (50) letter were earned.

While most people took off during the holiday break, Senior Aaron Anderson and Nicole Brown looked at it as an opportunity to improve their district and regional status. Anderson known more as a 300m hurdler was convinced to try the shorter hurdle event to work on his technique has really taken a love for the event. Each week, his performances has gotten better, achieving the regional qualifying mark three (3) times, collecting a 4^th place medal at the Southern Mega Meet, the #3 district ranking, #7 regional ranking and #35 state ranking. Anderson was challenged to improve his strength in the longer spirit and he again rose to the challenge achieving the Liberty District qualifier in the 500m dash twice.

Nicole Brown has tried almost every sport Marshall has to offer including golf, volleyball, field hockey, soccer and her #1 love lacrosse. Brown finally tried track and field this year and she has excelled in it with lighting speed. During the break, she hit the Liberty District qualifier twice (2) and has moved to the #1 district and #7 regional ranking in the 55m hurdles. Like Anderson, Brown was challenged in the 500m dash and she also excelled – grabbing the district qualifier, #3 district ranking, #13 Regional ranking, #38 State ranking and #67 National ranking.

With all the impressive performances the past three weeks, only one athlete has the distinction of achieving a district qualifier at each meet she has competed during the break. Sophomore Courtney Herbolsheimer completed that feat in the last three weekends in the 1000m (3:17.34), 1600m (5:32.39) and the 3200m (12:21.88). Herbolsheimer is ranked top 10 in the District; top 35 in distance loaded regional and top 60 in the state.

Junior Brittany Johnson continue to have impressive performances at the sports and learning complex achieving a state qualifier in the high jump, a regional qualifier in the 55m dash and district qualifier in the long jump. Johnson is currently holds the #1 district ranking in the long jump and high jump, she is ranked #2 in the 55m dash. In the high jump, Johnson has the impressive ranking of #1 district, #2 region, #10 state and #38 nationally.

Senior Alexander “Lex” Saures and junior Meara Goss missed one meet each during the three weeks but they showed know effects when they returned for the Southern Maryland Mega meet. Both improved on their #1 Liberty District ranking with Saures achieving a northern regional qualifier, losing out at the meet only to the #1 ranked regional ranked thrower from Stuart. It has been a wonderful return for Saures after taking off his junior year. Goss seem to have gotten over the injuries from earlier in the season as she improved her District mark while earning two medals at the invitationals she competed over the break.

Seniors John Peterman and Lucas Rooney has taking their leadership duties directly to the track. Peterman on a mission to qualify for the regional championship has improved his mark in the 500m dash each time he has stepped on the track. Even with a two week layoff from practicing, Peterman still managed to achieve a personal best and district qualifier. Rooney has stepped up his game and the success is coming in strides as including a big personal best and district qualifier in the 3200m run this past weekend. He also is a staple on the 4x800m and 4x400m relay team and has led his young distance crew some promising performances.

The future looks bring as the young guns has stepped up, most impressively are the performances by the Ritter brothers, Gabriel and Nicholas. Each week one or the other has stepped and represented the family proudly. Week one it was young Nicholas as he lowed his personal best nearly 15 seconds in the 1000m. Week two, Nicholas again stepped up and lowered his personal best in the 1600m nearly 22 seconds but Gabriel also go into the act, lowering his 1000m personal best by nearly 12 seconds to dip below the 3 minute mark. Week three, Gabriel took the spotlight running an impressive final lap, he lowered his personal best in the 1600m by over 22 seconds, Nicholas also achieved a personal best in the 3200m run – they closed the invitational week for the team by running on the 4x200m relay with Rooney and senior Sam Hagopian, it was seasonal best for the team.

The selection of the District championship comes down to two more meets on Jan. 10^th and Jan. 17^th. There will be some spirited battles as the full team return from break and fight for a return trip to the Prince George’s Sports and Learning complex later in the month. Special thanks to all the coaches for their hard work and the athletes for giving up their break to compete and parents for all their support.

District champions collect wins to open the season.

Junior Virginia AAA All State high jumper Brittany Johnson started the season where left off, clearing 5ft 2in. However, in stead of George Mason, it was Thomas Jefferson Middle school and instead of taking 6^th, it was a winning the event. While the State meet certainly should not be held on the same level as a quad meet, for Johnson it signifies the continuing of the road to be a state champion. The height is significant because it was the final height cleared last season and she matched it to start the season, its like getting 30 more jumps to see how high she can get. Johnson not forgetting she is the defending Liberty District 55m dash champion, she won her new specialty (500m dash) in a personal best.

Fellow junior and defending Liberty District shot put champion Meara Goss has been fighting injuring to start the season, hardly getting to practice as she would like but it’s hard to stop a warrior. Goss looking to getting back to the State championship meet didn’t let the pain and lack of enough practice to affect her performance as she dominate the competition winning by over three feet in a Liberty District championship qualifier.

It’s been a long road back for 2007 VA AAA State finalist Alexander “Lex” Saures since his last full season. His life has been filled with challenges and questions however, the last time full season he was in the circle, he left a District champion. Saures hope things has come full circle and he is on way back to reclaiming what is owed to him. Saures and Goss reminded Statesmen fans of season 2000 – 2001 when Marshall had too dominating throwers by the name of Culbreath and Barham. That season ended at the state championship for both Marshall Athlete of the Year. Saures won his event and qualified for the Liberty District championship.

It is amazing what happens when you set goals and go after them, Senior John Peterman hope that lesson learned on the first meet of the season will results in success. Step one was taken and achieved with precision as Peterman goal was to hit his best mark from last season at the first meet. Running a smooth first 300m, Peterman excelled on the final lap with ease and control to hit his desire goal, mission accomplish.

Sophomore Courtney Herbolsheimer coming off of a MVP cross-country season which reinforced her wonderful freshman year which saw her qualify for the Northern Regional championship. Getting off to a great start is important to preparing for the expected battle in the distance heavy Liberty District. Herbolsheimer got a taste of the battle early with Jefferson, McLean, Langley and South Lakes and came out tested and rewarded. As she place 2^nd in the 1600m run and won the 1000m very close to her personal best but miles ahead of last season’s pace.

Senior Nicole Brown’s track career should have started three year ago, but when you’re an All-Star lacrosse player – you can get pre-occupied. Brown started her season with a bang placing 2^nd in the 500m dash and clearing 4ft 8in in the high jump to take 3^rd in the event. She is also an up and coming hurdler.

The expectation for the season was really up in the air, the reality is the coaching staff is still getting to know the student-athletes and the student-athletes are getting use to the staff. What’s most important is the season is started and now we can work to improve the team. All together there where sixty-five (69) personal best achieved, thirteen (13) letter gained, three (3) District championship qualifier, one Regional and one State championship qualifier.

Hargrove close out wonderful high school career at States

Senior Jacqueline Hargrove finished her high school career with two state medal from the indoor championship. However, she was left disappointed as once again - she finished two spots out of the medal for a second straight year at the outdoor championship. Hargrove finished a very respectable 10th in the AAA meet after posting a time of 58.74.

Freshman Brittany Johnson looked to be in great position take over the reins finished 30th in the 100m and failed to clear a height in the high jump after the opening was raised to 5ft 2in. Johnson will look to continue the Statesmen presense at the State championship and follow in the footsteps of Ms. Hargrove. Who is off to Manhattan College in New York on a full scholarship in track and field. Her next goal is to qualify for the USA track and field trials and the Olympic games in 2008.

Johnson shines at Regional

--Hargrove disqualified after winning heats.

In a sign of the changing of the guards, freshman Brittany Johnson took up the mantle and stepped into the spotlight as senior Jacqueline Hargrove literately past the torch after been disqualified for stepping on the line on the curve during her qualifying 400m race. Johnson has been getting better and better each meet after battling some injuries and overload of school work. While her school work has gotten lesser as the semester grew near, her workload on the track has increase and its paying dividend. The signs of her improved work habit and improvement showed flashes at the District Championship, when she led for most of the 100m race before losing at the end. There were to be no such repeat as Johnson was the hunter, first coming from behind to finish in a dead even tie for first place in the heats. In the final, she again has to come from behind and this time, second wasn’t an option as she was running from the slow section and need to win to ensure a place to the State championship. Like her fearless leader, after winning the slow second of 100m final in a personal best (12.80), Johnson because only the 2^nd freshman in seven (7) years to qualify for the State championship.

For most people, one event would be enough but no, Johnson like Hargrove her freshmen wanted more. Hargrove had qualified her first year in the 200m and 400m dash, Johnson’s opportunity was in the high jump. After runner up performance at the Liberty District champs, she had to be confident and it showed as she cleared the open height with ease and did the same at 4ft 10in. She also gains some sense of satisfaction as the District championship fail to clear that height. Johnson would not clear another height but equaling her personal best was good enough to secure a 4^th place finish and a second event at the State meet.

Senior Jacqueline Hargrove’s removal from her final regional championship left one dream unfulfilled – winning a regional title. Three times Hargrove finished second, with two coming lost coming in dramatic fashion as she lost the indoor triple jump title back in 2005 by a quarter of an inch on the final attempt and this winter she lost the 500m dash title after leading for most of the race at the line. The event was hers to lose after coming into the meet with over a second advantage over the next competitor who she defeated handedly at District. Hargrove seem to be on the winning to collecting the missing title after she had won the heats with the fastest time (58.33) with the closest competitors more than a second behind (59.70). However, the rules only allowed two steps on the line while running the curve with anything over resulting in an automatic disqualification from the event and Hargrove was charged with taking four consecutive steps. While it didn’t impede or would have made a difference based on the times posted, the officials made the judgment call with no coach’s protest allowed.

Sophomore Alexander “Lex” Saures is a fighter and warrior but there are limits and the number is 9. Nine is the number of people that goes to finals in the discus, unfortunately Saures need one more practice session, one more turn at the circle, one more weight lifting session, one more (you complete) because it all come down to one more place and 3 inches. No athlete wants to be number 10 or number 6 @ District; unfortunately Lex would have to use it as motivation for next year. As if one heartbreak was not enough, Lex has the displeasure of finishing two spots out of the finals for the shot put event. It was a tough semester for Alexander and with some hard work especially with his school work, next year will be much better.

Junior Oscar Olazo just can’t seem to get a break with it comes to regional championship, last year he finished 8^th and ticks away from the State championship. This year it looked to be different as Olazo took the leader the first lap of the 800m run and seem to put himself in place for a run at the championship. But, this year the competition was stronger and the battle was fierce but put till the end and finished a respectable 11^th in the event, motivation for next year!!!!!!!!!!!!

Freshman Meara Goss is the future of Marshall throwing and her place at the State meet will be a staple of the program. However, it was not to be this year, after creating a fire storm this year by winning four District meets and taking a bronze medal at the District Championship, Goss showed she is ready and her future in this season is bright.

Junior Ann-Elise Gustavsen unfortunately will not be able to continue her progress from this year as she will be return back home for her senior year. Gustavsen started the year trying to sprint and was asked to try throwing. Unhappy but respectfully she try it and it was all over from there, as she feel in love with the event. It was all come full circle at the indoor District meet with she finished 6^th to qualify for the regional champs. In the spring the take seem impossible as Gustavsen came in ranked 7^th in the finals but on her final throw she increased her personal best by one foot to reach her second regional championship – even though she did not like the results, it was a wonderful experience. Hope she continues her throwing when she returns home.

Sophomore Chandler Dennison had the season going just the way she like it, she had qualified for the District in the 200m, 400m & 800m run and ready to take it to the next level. Dennison had just run a relay PR in the 4x800m and then things took a turn for the worst. She got hurt in the open 800m the meet before District and things haven’t got right since. Even though she was a warrior and ran with courage, even the “Gladiator – Russell Crowe (2002)” – could not overcome injuries. Dennison will look to get health and be ready to take over the leadership role left by the departure of the seniors.

Junior Lance Cheng has been battle injures all season and it hampered his ability to improve on his wonderful indoor season. His performances have been consistence through the season and the regional championship was no different. Cheng ran close to his personal best and can feel accomplished and encouraged for next year.

Hargrove repeats as District Champion

-Saures (2), Goss, Johnson (2), Dennison, Gustavan, Cheng, Olazo qualifies for Regional.

Senior Jacqueline Hargrove won her 13^th and final Liberty District crown at Thomas Jefferson High School. Hargrove’s school and meet record in the 400m dash was as dominating as her four years in the District which saw her finished no worst than 3^rd in ever individual events. In total Hargrove won 29 medal in four years of District competition including gold medals in the 55m dash (3), 400m (2), 200m (2), 300m (2), 100m, Long Jump, shot put and 4x400m and silver medals in the 55m, 100m, 400m, High Jump, Long jump (3) and triple jump (2).

In an impressive career that will continue next year at Manhattan College in New York City, Hargrove leaves to follow in her footsteps two wonderful freshman – Brittany Johnson and Meara Goss. Johnson will look to represent in the sprint and the jumps and look to be off to a great start – collecting a silver medal in the high jump and medaling and qualifying for the regional championship in the Long jump (6^th – 15ft ) and 100m (12.87 – 4^th). Goss continue to impress and continue her accent into the legacy of Marshall’s throwing tradition by capturing a bronze medal in her first District competition. Junior Ann-Elise Gustavsen improved on her 6^th place finish during the indoor season to move from 7^th to 4^th in the shot put of final.

Sophomore Chandler Dennison indoor season ended a tad bit too early just as she was gearing up to drop some times but the outdoor was shaping out to be her time until a injury at the last regular season meet threaten to take it all away. Dennison put it all behind her like the Warrior she is by running an impressive lead off leg on the 4x800m relay team and came back to do battle in the 800m race. Running behind one of the greatest distance runner in Liberty District W.T.Woodson Sarah Hadiji, Dennison picked her spot and then put in a great kick in the last 100m to place 5^th and secure her place at regional.

Coming into the final 150m of the 800m final, junior Oscar Olazo must have had to be thinking here comes my first District title but out of no where South Lakes senior Chris Webb came rumbling down the straightway and pushing Olazo back to his runner up spot for the second year in a row. Olazo meet wasn’t all good as he did not get his chance to compete in the 4x800m and 4x400m relay teams.

Junior Lance Cheng confirmed his place as a legit Liberty hurdle by making the final and qualifying for both the indoor and outdoor regional championship. Cheng meet wasn’t with out disappointment as he fail to make the finals of the triple jump and miss capturing the two season double after winning the indoor title.

Sophomore Alexander “Lex” Saures had the hardest road to the Liberty District championship as he had to battle elements outside of the circle so that he can return to competition. So without much practice under his belt, Saures picked up where he left off from the indoor season (when he qualified for the State championship) to qualify for the regional championship. Lex looked rusty as he could only muster just over 42ft in the shot put but was impressive in the discus as he threw over 120 feet for a career second best.

Junior William “Alex” Haugh had a wonderful championship by running a personal best in the 1600m run (4:41), a PR leg on the 4x800m (2:05) and finally ended the meet with a PR leg on the 4x400m relay team (54.8). Sophomore Patrick Sullivan dropped over 13 seconds off his personal best in the 3200m run and fellow sophomore Lisa Carter after completing her 200 push ups the night before dropped over two seconds off her personal best in the 800m.

Team looked ready for District Champs @ TJ Penultimate

Senior Jacqueline Hargrove qualifies for the Northern Regional championship in the 400m dash, just missed qualifying for the State championship by .04 in winning the event at the Thomas Jefferson Pentultimate Experience. Hargrove (2:23.2) also ran the fastest leg on the top 5 All-time 4x800m relay team. She joined up with sophomores Chandler Dennison (2:24.0), Lisa Carter (2:47.2) and Caroline Gieseler (2:38.8) in running the best time in over 12 years.

Freshman Brittany Johnson also qualified for the regional championship in the 100m dash (12.96 - 4th) and placed 3rd in the high jump (4ft 8in - District Qualifier).

Junior Lance Cheng qualified for final of the 110m Hurdlers (17.29 - District Qualifier) and triple jump (38ft 11in - Seasonal Best). Junior Oscar Olazo (2:02.0 - relay) placed 5th in the 800m and anchored the 4x800m relay to a silver medal with seniors Alex Cvrk (2:05.0), Jason Pennington (2:06.0) and fellow junior William "Alex" Haugh (2:05.0).

Sophomore Aaron Anderson automatically qualified for the District championship in the 300m hurldes (45.06) and split (55.2) on the 4x400m relay team.

Hargrove take two silver medal, Johnson wins Freshman 100m dash

Senior Jacqueline Hargrove look to be back to her usual ways after taking it slowly in her return from an indoor injury. Hargrove placed 2nd in the 400m dash (59.09) in a Northern Regional automatic qualifier and came back an hour later to take 2nd in the 200m dash (26.86).

Freshman Brittany Johnson won the freshman 100m dash (12.98) and booked her ticket to the regional championship, she also placed 5th in the High jump (4ft 6in) and 3rd in the 200m (27.41) in District Qualifiers.

Fellow freshman Meara Goss placed 4th in the Shot Put with a Liberty District qualifier (31ft 7in) and also make the finals of the Discus (79ft 9in).

Junior Oscar Olazo (2:01), junior William "Alex" Haugh (1600m - 4:43), freshman Akkarin Chorachaturaphak (300mH), junior Lance Cheng (300mH) and sophomore Chandler Dennison (2:27.11 - 800m) qualified for the District championship.

Junior Lance Cheng wins 110mH (16.54 - District Qualifier), long jump (17ft 11.25in) and take 2nd in triple jump (36ft 6in).

Freshman Meara Goss the for first time throw over 30ft in winning the shot put (30ft 7in - District Qualifier).

Senior Jacqueline Hargrove won the 100m dash (13.04 - District Qualifier) and sophomore Chandler Dennison took 3rd - 13.74 but Dennison came back to win the 200m dash (27.64) in a Liberty District Qualifier.

Freshman Brittany Johnson won the 400m dash (1:05.54) and sophomore Caroline Gieseler took 2nd in 1:06.34.

Senior Alex Cvrk won the 1600m run with a personal best of 4:51.64.

Freshman Akkarin Chorachaturaphak won the 300m hurdles (44.34 - District Qualifier) and junior Patrick Roddy took 2nd (46.44).

Junior William "Alex" Haugh won the 800m run (2:07.64) in a personal best.

Sophomore Alexander "Lex" Saures medal and joined the ranks of the over 45ft throwers. Continuing on his impressive indoor showing which included an appearance at the State championship - Saures throw over the magical mark and achieved 46ft 4.5in.

Freshman Meara Goss achieved her District qualifier in the discus in placing 10th with a throw of 88ft 10in.

Freshman Thomas "Jace" Barrett dropped over 16 seconds in the 3200m run and junior Matthew Muise jumped over 17ft for the first time in the Long jump (17ft 3in).

Sophomore Aaron Anderson achieved personal best in the 100m dash (12.52) and 300mH (45.57).

Team travel to Maryland and collect hardware

The boy's 4x800m relay team made up for missing the Penn Relay's qualifying mark by dominating the C.H. Flowers Invitational. The team improved on their 2nd place finish last year and won the competition by over 10 seconds in a season best and just missed the regional qualifying by two seconds. The team of senior Alex Cvrk, junior William "Alex" Haugh, senior Jason Pennington and junior Oscar Olazo ran 8:14.24.

Freshman Brittany Johnson placed 2nd in the high jump (4ft 10in) and achieved personal best Liberty District Mark in the 100m (13.36).

Senior Jacqueline Hargrove achieved the first Regional qualifier for the season in taking 5th in the 400m dash (1:00.58).

Sophomore Alexander "Lex" Saures achieved two automatic Liberty District Qualifers in the Shot Put and Discus.
