The
boy’s relay team
dominated the quad meet winning all three of them, the 4x800m relay team
(Seniors Patrick Smith & Thomas Sweeney, Junior Sebastian and Freshman Seth
Oliver) of won by 58 seconds, the 4x400m relays team (Juniors Ryan Amarillas,
Adam Sarnovsky, Malave and Senior Patrick Smith) won by 13 seconds and the 4x200m
relays team
(Amarillas, Sarnovsky, Senior Wilson Tryon and Junior Omar Nayfeh) led wire to
wire for the win. The girl’s 4x800m relay team (Juniors Elizabeth Epstein,
Claire Lee and Caroline Sullivan along with Freshman Haley Sopden) won by 28
seconds.
Sophomore
Torri McNabb has an excellent personal best in the 55m hurdles (10.31) and it
is more remarkable because it was done in flats and without spikes. Sophomore
Ethan Grace hit another District qualifier in the high jump (5ft 6in). Freshman
Haley Sopden won the 1000m run (3:32.02) with Senior Lena Smith finishing a
very close second in 3:32.05.
Senior
Wilson Tryon run a remarkable 300m dash running sub 40 (39.23) in the slippery
track – just losing out on time from another heat. Freshman Haseba Kazan run a nearly
4 second personal best in the 300m (53.64, fellow freshman Alexander Oliver run
a two second personal best in the 500m dash (1:20.15) and won the JV 55m event,
Sophomore Daniel Heltberg run a nearly 10 second personal best in the 1600m (5:48.64).Freshman Conner Tadlock had a one foot
personal best in the shop put.

Seniors Grace Bir
and Alessandro Gatti picked up where they left off last season by qualifying for
the state championship in February.Bir
coming off an All-state honors in the 400m and 500m last season, booked her
ticket to the champs by running the second fast time in school in the 300m
(41.24), ranking her #7 in the state, #2 in the region and #1 in the District.
Gatti competing in his first outdoor state championship last spring after
taking 2nd in the regionals booked his place in the winter champs by
placing 2nd at the Bowie Invitational in personal best 47ft 11in. He
is ranked #13 in the state, #2 in region and #1 in the District.
Juniors Elizabeth
Epstein and Sebastian Malave received All-State Honors last season in the
relays but are making early statements to be in the running to collect individual
honors this year. Epstein qualified for the regional champs in the 500m dash
with a state #11 ranking (1:20.11) and Malave dropped a second and half in the
500m dash to auto qualify for the regional champs (1:09.19).
Senior Sydney Smith
secure a bronze medal in the 3200m run (12:24.20) and while freshman Haley Spoden
made her winter track and field debut in a smashing way – go wire to wire in
the slow section to secure a bronze medal in the 1600m run (5:39.72). First the
first time in 20 years, two sprinters broke seven seconds in the 55m dash in
the same meet, Senior Wilson Tryon (6.96) and Sophomore Spencer Lewis (6.99) achieved
that feat and both qualified for the District champs.
Senior Liam Watts
is a true example of perseverance, hard work and consistency and he was rewards
with his first sub nine clocking in the 55m hurdles (8.99). Junior Stephen Hickey-Bailey
is a nice early season surprise hitting his second district qualifying effort
(37ft 6.5in) in as many meets. Juniors Claire Lee (1:25.98) and Patrick Smith
(1:10.09) are pictures of consistency and qualified for the District championship
in the 500m dash. Sophomore Sayda Bir is continuing to do what Birs do –
starting their rise in the sophomore year, for the 2nd week in a row
– she hit a district qualifying mark in the 300m dash.
The high jumpers
continue to performance well with three more District auto qualifying marks,
Seniors Noelle Lewis (4ft 6in) and Ian Thompson (5ft 6in) along with sophomore
Ethan Grace (5ft 6in).
In the 800m run,
junior Leah Bell had nearly 5 second PR, Senior Thomas Sweeney had a nearly 3
second PR and Junior Spencer Schmind had a nearly 7 second PR.In the 1600m
Sophomores Fatimah Salem and
Titus Brock each had a nearly 7 second PR, senior Annie Leap had over a quarter
of second PR in the 55m dash and Junior Omar Nayfeh had nearly three quarter second PR in the 300m Dash.
The team will
never compete at the EHS Quad in Alexandria on Saturday, Dec. 21st,
2019 starting at 7AM.

The 3rd
annual David Cannon Polar Bear Memorial Invitational is now a tradition in honor
of one of the greatest distance runner ever say over 1000 entries and 14
teams.The weather was excellent for a polar
bear meet with middle 40s and lots of sunlight.
Junior Sebastian
Malave took advance of the bigger track and his home track to win the 1000m
(2:37.92) and automatically qualified for the regional championship. Senior
Grace Bir roll to a smooth and easy win in the 300m dash in a near personal best
41.58. Sophomore Ethan Grace coming outstanding freshman year, captured his first
meet with and automatically qualified for District Championship in the high
jump with a leap of 5ft 8in.
Senior Alessandro
Gatti started off his season with a near personal best and regional champs
qualifier in the shot put (46ft 10in). Junior Stephen Hickey-Bailey followed
suit with an eight feet personal best (38ft 7in) to book his ticket to District
champ. Junior Sarah Pounder took a giant step in recovering from injury to qualify
for District in the shot put (28ft 11in)
The high jumpers
looking to be leaping to higher height early with 5 athletes bettering the
District standards – two time defending champion Senior Noelle Lewis (4ft 6in),
Spring Regional Qualifier Sophomore Nicola Becker (4ft 6in) and new comers
Sophomore Sayda Bir (4ft 6in) and on the boy’s side Junior Alejandro Silva (5ft
6in) – they join Boy’s winner Grace (5ft 8in).
Sprinters moved up
to the mid distance race and had some fun with 4 athletes bettering the
District standard – Juniors Adam Sarnovsky (1:10.33), Jason Harrington
(1:11.95), Aamir Qureshi (1:11.96) and Ryan Amarillas (1:12.42). Junior Elizabeth
Epstein looked ready for
another great season running a half a second to her personal best in the 1000m
(3:09.87), Junior Claire Lee tagged along running 3:24.71 in the event, on the
boy’s junior Patrick Smith pushed teammate Malave to the finishing line to take
2nd in 2:41.49 – all three athletes secured District Qualifiers.

Smith booked her ticket in the 1600m (5:38.55) to the District champs taking 2nd
in the event.Sophomore Sayda Bir
followed her sister home in the 300m (44.68) to take 2nd and fellow
sophomore Avery Tarutani will make a return in the 300m (46.52)to the District
champs.
